SENIOR ACCOUNT CLERK

City of Middletown

The City of Middletown is accepting applications for the position of Senior Account Clerk. All applicants will be required to take a written examination on Tuesday, October 22, 2019. Salary Range:  $34,892 to $45,998 annually with excellent benefits.  Experience in accounting, bookkeeping, income tax, and business practices required.

 

Position Summary

This position does clerical accounting work in the maintenance, review, and processing of financial records and data. Position requires strong communication and listening skills and the ability to interact with customers in a professional manner to provide appropriate solutions in a timely manner.   

Work involves the preparation and maintenance of records; the auditing of supporting documents, billings, and entering information into accounts; and accounting for cash receipts.  Work is performed in a teamwork environment and under general supervision in accordance with established operational routines and procedures.  Independent judgment is needed in various aspects of the work and in the completion of assignments.  Work is reviewed by observation and by internal control systems and audits for adherence to standard operating procedures and accuracy.

This position requires moderate physical exertion.  Most of the job is spent sitting, with occasional walking, bending, and some lifting (less than 25 pounds).  Certain coordinated finger/limb movement must be performed during the regular work routine.  Mature speech and hearing skills are required for telephone contacts and personal contacts.  Clear vision is required for use of the computer terminal, for auditing and posting information.

Position Qualifications

  1. High School Diploma or GED including or supplemented by courses in accounting, bookkeeping, income tax, business practices, and public relations; experience in bookkeeping or related work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.
    • Ability to make arithmetic computations accurately and with reasonable speed.
    • Skill in the operation of calculators, computers (accounting, spreadsheets, database and word processing) and other office equipment required by the nature of the assignment.
    • Apply accounting principles, practices and techniques, including governmental procedures, to various records and reports.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with others; must be able to work with public in a professional working relationship.
    • Must be bondable.

Duties and Responsibilities (For Performance Appraisal)

  1. Assemble figures to be used in the preparation of financial statements and reports.
  2. Balance cash receipts; collect revenue and verify that amount and transaction codes are correct in individual customer accounts.
  3. Prepare and post invoices and return analyzing accounts for collection purposes.
  4. Prepare billing statements and post payments for emergency medical service billing.
  5. Balance bank statements and various reports.
  6. Prepare various types of written documents in connection with the collection of revenue.
  7. Review and process payments and refunds to customers.
  8. Prepare daily deposits.
  9. Prepare or post annual reconciliations of accounts.
  10. Review customer invoices, returns, and other documentation for accuracy.
  11. Edit and correct computer printouts; trace account transactions; and determine entries needed in the correction process.
  12. Set up and maintain payment plan system.
  13. Interact with customers via emails, over the phone, or in person in a professional manner.
  14. Provide customers with appropriate solutions in a timely manner.
  15. Perform related work as required by supervision.
