CoastConnect is looking for a full-time Fiber Technician to work in the Pearl River, Hancock, and Harrison County areas. In this position, you will play a lead role in residential and commercial fiber optic installations of internet and VoIP service, troubleshooting and helping to resolve all service-related issues.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Fiber Technician will complete fiber optic installations for residential/business customers including splicing and installation of fiber drop connections both outside and inside of premise. The Technician will analyze and troubleshoot basic technical problems or issues (e.g., no light level on ONT, no WI-FI signal, latency issues). The Technician will review, interpret, and work with various maps, drawings and blueprints and testing documents. The Technician will install equipment including but not limited to ONT (modem), router (gateway), extenders (mesh units) and telephone (wiring, phone, etc).
The Technician will program subscribers premise equipment including but not limited to wireless networks, support app (MyCoastConnect), telephone, and data networks. The Technician will educate subscribers and potential subscribers on CoastConnect products and services. The Technician will operate fiber optic test equipment for troubleshooting and diagnostic malfunctions in the hut and outside the plant during normal work hours as well as after hours to maintain high quality connectivity. The Technician will coordinate with Network Operations Center (NOC) and CoastConnect Fiber Services personnel to validate service restoration and/or service installation. The Technician will perform daily test, checks and maintenance of splicing and testing equipment. The Technician will perform optical continuity and conformance testing and complete routine preventive maintenance.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Must possess a valid Mississippi driver’s license. Must be able to work from heights of 28 foot or greater (by ladder or bucket truck) for extended periods of time. Must have the ability to use computers and computer systems to set up functions, enter date, or process information. Must have the ability to learn fusion and mechanical splicing and selecting and constructing the correct splice enclosure. Must have the ability to learn and apply the rules and regulations of various regulatory bodies impacting the operation of a telecommunications system including, but not limited to, FCC, NEC, NESC, and OSHA, as well as local and state ordinances, codes, and regulations.
This position requires the ability to work during regular business hours or when on-call. Must be available to work overtime including weekends, evenings, and holidays as required. Must be able to see things at a close distance (within a few feet). Must have the ability to apply practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion, and geometric construction. Must be able to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. Must have good judgment and decision-making skills. Must have the ability to recognize potential service issues (e.g., dead tap, light levels of specification, etc.).
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Must be able to listen and give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times (e.g., listening to a customer, etc.). Must have the ability to read manuals, maps and the like and ability to prepare summaries and reports. Must be able to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. Excellent customer service skills. The ability to stay cool, calm, and collected during difficult or challenging times and the ability to remain positive when resolving problems related to construction projects and contractor compliance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must have the ability to stand, walk, bend, and stoop (e.g., crawlspaces, inside customer home, etc.). Must have the ability to drive or ride in a vehicle for long periods of time when necessary. Must have the ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects and to quickly respond with the hand, finger, or foot to a signal (sound, light, picture) when it appears. Must have the ability to see details at close range and at a distance. Must have good night vision to operate a vehicle and perform work in response to after-hours calls. Must have the ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 75 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work is performed both inside and outside in the extremes of wind, heat, cold, wet, and humid weather with frequent exposure to noise, vibration, fumes, odors, and dust.
