Organizational Unit Overview
Information Technology and Computing Services (ITCS) is the central agency that supports enterprise-wide computing at East Carolina University. ITCS, through innovative information technology initiatives and service, provides opportunities for the ECU community to excel in teaching, research, and service using state-of-the-market technology and collaborative environments. ITCS is first and foremost committed to providing excellent information technology support for faculty, staff, and students. ITCS partners with campus departments, other universities, and industry to make strategic investments in information technology infrastructure that will help maintain a competitive advantage in administrative applications, faculty research, and outreach to the state and nation. We will achieve this through increasing the core functions and deploying appropriate technology throughout the university.
Networking Services is composed of various primary support areas including: Network Engineering, Network Infrastructure, Network Security and Analysis, and Unified Communications; Voice and Collaboration services.
Job Duties
- Design large and complex on-prem, hybrid, and cloud-based data networks
- Analyze the university’s business, data, and application strategy to develop a cohesive architectural model
- Work on projects including complex integration efforts which may include transitioning applications to new technologies
- Define the network architecture and design alternatives/solutions by translating business and technical requirements
- Design, plan, implement, and support campus network architecture and functionality changes in core routing/switching, and data centers, as well as overseeing connectivity to ECU’s ISP
- Strategic enterprise planning by consulting with senior level decision-makers on an on-going basis to develop long-range strategic alternatives
- Supervisor of Network Infrastructure and Network Engineering teams
- Provide consultancy services to stakeholders as it relates to current or potential offerings
- Counsel customers on best-practice approaches as it pertains to networking for any new IT project they will be implementing
- Plan, implement and support networking requirements for campus research projects
- Investigate and prototype emerging network technologies and plan for production introduction of network technologies new to ECU
- Assist with customer issues/requests as the needs arise
Employees are required to adjust their standard work schedule to meet the requirements of their position, which includes and not limited to evening and weekend hours to perform scheduled and unscheduled workload requirements to maintain University operations.
Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. For management roles, a minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience is required.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Experience in data networking, including administering and supporting Enterprise IT Systems or Infrastructure in the following: Data Center Switching, Core routing, Distribution routing, Routing/Interaction with ISP, Firewalls, Edge Switching, Wireless, and VOIP
• Significant hands-on experience focused on designing data/telecommunications networks and/or developing data network/telecommunications service offerings.
• Experience in leading complex IT projects.
• Experience with data networking at scale in large data network environments
• Experience with Network Automation, Network Function Virtualization, and Software Defined Networks.
• Experience with scripting languages with an emphasis on network automation (Python 3 a plus).
• Engineer’s solutions within the boundaries of budget and time constraints.
• Experience with creating detailed reports, diagrams, system documentation, white papers, solution briefs, etc.
