Associate Director Early Identification Program

About the Department:

The Early Identification Program (EIP) serves as George Mason University’s college access and preparation program. In partnership with seven distinct public school systems, EIP provides multi-year, year round support to college bound first-generation students throughout Northern Virginia.


About the Position:

The Associate Director will serve as the chief program officer and is an integral member of the Early Identification Program (EIP). This individual will work closely with the Executive Director in providing leadership and administration of all aspects of the EIP, to include sharing leadership responsibilities for the Executive Director, as needed.



  • Direct supervision of two Assistant Directors for College Success;
  • Planning and development of programmatic initiatives;
  • Responsible for EIP’s assessment and reporting;
  • Management of EIP’s Summer Academy scheduling, recruitment, and hiring of mentoring staff, and leadership for several key aspects of the summer program;
  • Work with Executive Director in managing all student services, which includes monitoring student academic progress/participation, decisions on student enrollment, the application and admission process, and communication/relationship management with families and all seven school division partners; and
  • Provide leadership through the management and coordination of high-profile events, to include Board of Visitor meeting, Senior graduation, and New Student Reception ceremony.


Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling or Secondary Education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Ability to perform and apply research of best practices needed for program enhancement;
  • Possess excellent writing and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to engage in high level thinking and be able to think critically, strategically, and be a problem solver;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to lead high profile events;
  • Ability to collaborate and work in a team-based environment;
  • Ability to manage budgets;
  • Ability to work independently, multi-task, and delegate tasks when appropriate;
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and handle confidential information with discretion;
  • Adept at managing data and assessing programs;
  • Experience working with middle school and high school aged youth, and families from diverse backgrounds in varying socioeconomically experiences;
  • Experience working with and developing college students;
  • Experience supervising and evaluating professional staff members;
  • Experience navigating complex and highly decentralized systems;
  • Experience managing budgets;
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends; and
  • Ability to travel independently.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working for or with college access programs;
  • Experience working in secondary school environments;
  • Knowledge of best practices related to college access for first-generation college bound students;
  • Ability to navigate large bureaucratic systems; and
  • Ability to communicate proficiently in Spanish (verbal and written).
