Opportunity: The College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) at Kent State University invites applications for a tenured Associate Dean at the rank of Associate or Full Professor—a twelve-month appointment that begins with the 2023 academic year. The successful candidate will serve as the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and serve on the College Executive Committee. This position requires a collaborative visionary leader to harness the College’s potential for growth of its existing programs as well as lead in the development of new programs and initiatives. They will be responsible for shared administrative oversight of the College’s programs, curriculum, advising, recruitment, internal and external assessment with a particular focus on graduate programs and education. They will assist with accreditation for the professional degrees, facilitate faculty research initiatives, and represent the College as an active participant on appropriate University committees. In addition to the administrative duties, the candidate will teach in their area of expertise at 25% load.
Minimum Requirements: They must possess a terminal degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Interior Design, Construction Management, or a related field; six years relevant experience, demonstrated excellence in leadership, administration, teaching, and research. The successful candidate will have a teaching, scholarship, research / creative work record that satisfies the requirement for tenure and promotion in the College and the University to the rank sought.

The CAED is a multidisciplinary college dedicated to preparing graduates to lead in a rapidly changing world in alignment with Kent State’s mission: “We transform lives and communities through the power of discovery, learning and creative expression in an inclusive environment.” It is focused on developing progressive professionals committed to improving the quality of life and public welfare through the design and construction of the built environment. It promotes the integration of practice and research as they relate to changing climatic, societal, and technological conditions and is committed to advancing the professions.
The College has an enrollment of over 1150 students with 40 full-time faculty and administrators. It offers undergraduate programs in Architecture, Architectural Studies, Interior Design (CIDA accredited), and Construction Management (ACCE Accredited), and graduate programs in Construction Management (M.S.), Architecture (NAAB Accredited), Landscape Architecture (LAAB Accredited), Urban Design, Healthcare Design, and a Master of Science in Architecture and Environmental Design. The CAED also oversees the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC) located in Downtown Cleveland. Its strategic plan forecasts continued growth in enrollment and additional tenure track hires with an emphasis on furthering a scholarly, research and design community dedicated to advancing disciplines relating to the built environment. Opportunity for cross-disciplinary collaboration between programs is complemented by campus units including the Design Innovation Initiative (DI Hub), Kent State’s highly ranked Fashion School, and The School of Visual Communication Design, the College of Aeronautics and Engineering, The Advanced Materials Institute and the Environmental Science and Design Institute, among others.
In addition to a rich array of university assets, CAED resources include a branch library, lighting lab, Fabrication Lab (FabLab) equipped with woodworking tools, CNC mills, a metal fabrication facility, vacuum forming and robotics, the Robotically Augmented Design Lab (RadLAB), and a Materials Library complete with a curated selection of Material ConneXion samples and other digital design assets. The CAED offers exceptional international study opportunities including sponsored studio travel opportunities, semester long programs in Florence and Paris, traveling workshops, and a progressive workshop, lecture, and exhibition series. The CAED occupies three primary locations: the LEED Platinum 107,000 sq. ft. John Elliot Center for Architecture and Design designed by Weiss/Manfredi bordering downtown Kent; the recently renovated Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative in Cleveland’s Playhouse Square; and the Palazzo Vettori in the historic center of Florence, Italy.
