Real Estate Newsletter Reporter
The Miami Herald Media Company is looking for an aggressive journalist who will deliver exclusive, news-breaking reporting on real estate of interest to business audiences in South Florida via a daily newsletter.
That means moving fast on breaking news while producing pieces that capture trends in the South Florida region. It’s a beat with plenty of competitors, from pure digital plays like Real Deal to business publications like the South Florida Business Journal and the Daily Business Review.
Topics will span residential and commercial real estate stories of interest to Realtors, brokers, civic planners, technology concerns and the financial and legal communities based on real estate.
Quick-hit stories may include high-profile sales, project milestones, marketing strategies, significant personnel moves, market reports, and conferences. Trend pieces will seek to connect the dots, explaining the real-estate business impact of significant reports and trends. A minimum of three quick-hit stories will be needed each day, along with regular trend stories and standing weekly features. He/she will coordinate with the consumer-focused real estate reporter to avoid overlap.
The person in this role will create daily stories and enterprise for miamiherald.com and our print publications and engage with the audience through all of our social media channels. He/she will assign and/or collect still and video images as needed.
The ideal candidate will proactively self-assign stories that are on the verge of going viral. He/she is an idea generator with strong social roots and deep knowledge of South Florida who can identify and include impacted people in stories. He/she should be able to work traditional sources as well as social media and analytics to identify the stories people are talking about or will be talking about.
In addition to traditional reporting and writing, you need to:
- Select stories with an eye for audience engagement and traffic
- Monitor trending topics from social media to inform editorial decisions
- Participate in occasional live editorial forums/events
- Manage photos, headlines, links, SEO and story packaging for publishing on MiamiHerald.com
- Aggregate content from third-party sources using related links, photo galleries, and videos
- Post at least three short news stories every work day, a weekly agenda, a weekly recap, and at least one weekly trend story, and work to achieve the newsroom annual medians of 500,000 local page views and/or 2 million page views overall
- Bring fresh ideas to daily content creation and social media promotion
- Engage with readers on social media platforms
- Monitor competitive web sites and social media in your coverage area and personal areas of interest
Desired skills and experience:
- 3 years of writing experience in a news organization
- Background in local real estate coverage preferred
- Data skills, including familiarity with database programs, are desired
- A good feel for audience interest and trends
- A fresh writing style in an engaging, conversational voice
- Comfort with video, photography, Google Docs, Microsoft Word and spreadsheets
- Team player who works collaboratively
Physical activity requirements:
- Works in an office environment. Requires ability to move from one location to another, sitting, standing, bending, talking, hearing, use of near, mid-range and far vision, and making visual accommodations.
- Uses a computer, which may require prolonged keyboarding and use of the mouse.
- Lifting of report/computer printouts may be necessary – up to 20 lbs.
- An employee may work more than his/her scheduled number of hours and may work non-traditional business hours.
- Ground or air travel may be necessary.
- The employee must have a valid Florida driver license, dependable vehicle, and carry vehicle insurance.
- Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary element of this job.
