(Full-Time, 12-Month Staff Position)
DEPARTMENT: Conservatory of Performing Arts
REPORTS TO: Accompanist Supervisor
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent certification, specialized study and relevant experience), with minimum one year experience as a Dance pianist and Musical Theatre pianist; ability to work some evenings and weekends as scheduled. Candidates must have dance accompanying experience to be considered for this position. This is a non-teaching position.
SCHEDULE: Work schedule is 35 hours per week; approx. 25 hrs/wk in studio during fall and spring semesters and 20 hrs/wk in studio during summer semesters plus off-site research hours for selection of music and development of vocabulary of dance and musical theatre.
PRIMARY
FUNCTION: Responsible for providing piano accompaniment for studio class work and for clarification and assistance with selection of appropriate music for Dance and Musical Theatre classes. Dance shall take preference over Musical Theatre for scheduling purposes.
DUTIES: Dance
- Select music to artistically and technically stimulate dance students, utilizing excellent sight-reading and accompanying skills.
- Oversee the efficient use of studio time by quickly and correctly selecting music.
- Assist in clarifying rhythms, phrases and lengths of exercises.
- Perform music suitable for Ballet, Folk, Character, Pointe, Male Technique, Variations, and Pas de Deux classes.
- Develop the vocabulary of dance by observing/listening to other accompanists, by discussion with instructors, and by utilizing written, visual, and aural materials.
- Assist dance instructors and dance accompanists in locating musical scores for classes, rehearsals, and/or performances.
DUTIES: Musical Theatre
- Provide accompaniment for musical theatre classes.
- Provide accompaniment for voice lessons.
- Assist in clarifying pitch, rhythm, phrase, and style of music presented for study in musical theatre classes and lessons.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
