Full time Essential Position
Performs difficult skilled work and technical work supervising and participating in repairing and operating a variety of landfill, construction, automotive, and specialized equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Landfill Superintendent. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate personnel.
Examples of Duties:
Supervising and performing the repair, maintenance and operation of heavy landfill equipment.
Performs maintenance on both gasoline and diesel powered equipment;
Installs, disassembles, cleans, repairs, replaces parts, reassembles, and tests a variety of drive train equipment;
Performs major and minor motor tune up, inserts and adjusts carburetors and lights;
Overhauls gasoline and diesel engines;
Performs all mechanical duties on gasoline and diesel engines and equipment;
Installs and adjusts new brake linings;
Replaces parts or entire electrical systems, replaces bulbs and fuses;
Changes and repairs tires;
Welds, cuts, and manufactures special tools and parts if not commercially available;
Operates refuse trucks and landfill equipment as required;
Assists with snow and ice control as needed;
Performs inventory of parts;
Performs related tasks as required.
Typical Qualifications:
Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of landfill equipment, trucks, construction, and maintenance equipment; skill in the use and operations of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work; ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken parts; ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; ability to read and understand equipment service manuals.
Supplemental Information:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by specialized technical training in gasoline and diesel engine repair and considerable experience in repairing automotive and power driven equipment; experience with welding equipment and cutting torches.
Heavy Equipment Mechanic/Operator II positions are the senior level position in a career ladder position series and employees possess a higher skill level and may be required to perform supervisory duties. Certificate in CFC recovery required.
Provide documentation of 200 hours of experience on equipment power train repairs. Provide documentation of 100 hours experience on welding projects. Provide documentation of 50 hours each on heavy equipment hydraulic repairs, electrical systems repairs, preventive maintenance work, compactor operating and track loader operating. Provide documentation of 20 hours on heavy equipment brake repairs.
